Juneteenth, funny sounding holiday with an interesting history. In January of 1863 Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. The people of Texas did not receive this good news until June 19, 1865. These people who had lived their lives in bondage for so many years were now officially free but they didn’t know it.
How many of us as Christians are still waiting on our Juneteenth? Over 2000 years ago Christ made his Emancipation Proclamation and forever broke the chains of sin. The problem is, like the freed slaves of Texas, many of us don’t realize that we are free. We are no longer slaves to sin and have been adopted as heirs to the father. It’s as if we have this huge inheritance that we have not claimed because either we refuse to acknowledge its there or like the enslaved individuals in Texas we don’t realize it.
The are many theories as to why it took so long for the message to get to African Americans in Texas but the one thing we know for certain is that Satan is real and he does not want us to know about our freedom. In 1863 that freedom came in the form of the Emancipation Proclamation but about 1830 years earlier it came in the form of a Man. Not just any man, the Son of the everlasting, holy God. The creator of the universe took on the form of a man, suffered as a man, and died a horrible death so that we could all be set free from our sins. All we need to do is acknowledge this freedom and when we receive it, tell others about it. When was your Christian Juneteenth?
1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
