Peculiar People (Devotional)

Warm Up

Lord, please bless the reading of your Holy Scripture. I pray that as we search your Word, you will stir the Holy Spirit within us and reveal new insight that leads to a changed life. Please help us to be doers of your Word and not just hearers. In Jesus name, Amen.
1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

In this verse, Peter gives a description of who and what we are in Christ. As I examine his words, the word peculiar is what stands out most. As Christians, do others look at us as peculiar? Sadly, this is not always the case. We often watch the same shows, listen to the same music, laugh at the same jokes, and react in the same way as people who do not know Christ.
As a young man, my life was changed when I came in contact with an individual who seemed peculiar to me. I won’t go into great detail about my personal testimony here but I will say that I was an angry teenager. Up until about the age of 17, I lived a very sinful life. Things changed for me when I noticed what I considered to be a peculiar individual. She had grown up like me, had the same hardships as me, but she was nothing like me. She had this joy and peace about her that quite frankly bothered me. In a sense, you could say I was jealous. I wanted what she had.
One day her demeanor bothered me so much that I decided to confront her and ask what her problem was. I was probably pretty rude in my approach, but I did not get the response that I was expecting. She responded by telling me about Jesus and the reason for her hope. Her words stuck with me and planted a seed that grew. A year later I attended church for the first time in my life and ended up accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.
My accepting Jesus was not the result of any popular traveling evangelist or a life-altering tragedy but the result of one young lady who was an amazing representation of her Lord and Savior. For more information on how a life lived for God can change the hearts of those around you. Check out the book of Daniel, which happens to be the topic of our next series of devotionals.

Cool Down

Lord in the testimony I shared, my life was changed because one young lady decided to be obedient to your Word. Lord, please give me the strength to have that type on an impact on someone else. In Jesus name, Amen.
